Changing Name After Wedding

Name Change After Your Wedding
By George Meszaros
There is no legal requirement to do so, yet most brides change their names after getting married. Normally, brides take their husband’s last name keeping their own first names. Commonly, newly married women hyphenate their surname with their husband’s. When Mary Jones marries Joe White, she may hyphenate the two surnames such as Jones-White. On rare occasions, men will change their names after the wedding.

Brides, who take on their husband’s last name, normally keep their middle names. Mary Ann Jones may become Mary White. The law prohibits the name change for the purpose of fraud. The new name is required to be entered in the appropriate space on the marriage license. If a woman is married for the second time, she may take the name of the second husband even though she has take the name of the first husband after her first marriage.

If is possible, and is often the case, for a married woman to continue to use her own maiden name professionally while taken on the new surname socially. So, she continues as Mary Jones at work, while socially she is Mrs. Mary White.

If the woman has children from a previous marriage, the children will normally retain the last name of their father. At the same time she may revert to her maiden name or take on her new husband’s last name. Make sure you notify all interested parties about your changed name to avoid confusion. Some of the most common places you should notify are doctors, dentists, banks, schools, and any organization you may belong to. Some organizations may accept a written letter, while other may require proof of name change.

If you decide to change your name in an unconventional way, you may be faced with some challenges. You may come up with a hybrid name made up of your surname and the surname of your husband. The process is going to be the same, except you may have to explain your new name to a few people.

If you decide to make the name change at a later date, you may file a petition for change of name with the court.
