think of hiring a printing company to print them out. In fact, you can
have other options if you do not want the standard printing

In fact, there are lots of advantages for DIY cards. The number one
advantage is certainly the cost. This is especially true if you will
only want twenty to thirty cards. Unless you are going to buy ready to
use blank cards and write the contents onto the cards yourself,
ordering invitations in such a small quantity will certainly cost you a
fortune. The unit price can be as high as fifteen to twenty US dollars.
However, the cost will only be a fraction of it if you are going to
adopt the idea of DIY. Even if you are going to hold a large and you
will need three hundred invitations, DIY cards should still be a
cheaper option. Unless you are going to print a few thousand cards, the
cost of DIY cards should be cheaper than mass production by a printing
company.
Besides, you will have more choices for your cards. Of course you can have your own unique design if you are going to hire a designer to help you to design and coordinate the printing. However, if you are only planning to hire a printing company to print the cards, you will be limited to the standard choices and options. For a DIY card, you will virtually have unlimited options. You can even make every card unique if you want. And this cannot be accomplished if you are going for the idea of mass production. Of course the cost will go up a little bit if you are really going to make every card unique since you cannot buy the materials in bulk.
You can also test a lot of different solutions and designs for your invitation if you are going to do it yourself. You can nearly say the sky is the limit. For sure you will still have some limit such as the supplies of materials and budget. However, there will be enough room for you to create the most unique or even the craziest invitation in the world.
Although you may use your printer at home to print the cards, most probably there are parts you will need to make by your hand. Since these parts of the invitations are hand-made works. Additional human touch can be added to the design. Besides, since it is a card made by you, you will certainly have additional satisfactions when you see the finished cards. Your guests will also be amazed by what you have done.
If you can afford the time to do so, I will still suggest you to make the invitation yourself. Even if you are going to hire a designer to do the invitation design for you, you can still discuss with the designer how the design can be enhanced by adding hand-made elements into the design. Then you can do the hand-made part yourself. You will find the invitation a lot more unique.
